In the body, simvastatin (the active component of the drug Zocor), which is an inactive lactone, is hydrolyzed and accompanied formation of the corresponding derivative.

Zocor is highly effective in lowering total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, or non-familial forms, with mixed hyperlipidemia (if high level of cholesterol is a risk factor).
During these studies it was found that noticeable effect is seen within 2 weeks, the maximum effect appears after 4-6 weeks after start taking the drug.
